Atif R. Mian, Professor, Economics, Public Policy and Finance (Princeton University) and Co-Founder & Board Member, Center for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP), is the John H. Laporte Professor of Economics, Public Policy and Finance at Princeton University, and Director of the Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy and Finance at the Woodrow Wilson School. Prior to joining Princeton, he taught at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Chicago Booth School of business. Professor Mian's work studies the connections between finance and the macroeconomy. His latest book, House of Debt, with Amir Sufi builds upon powerful new data to describe how debt precipitated the Great Recession. The book explains why debt continues to threaten the global economy, and what needs to be done to fix the financial system. House of Debt is critically acclaimed by The New York Times, Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, and The Atlantic among others. Professor Mian's research has appeared in top academic journals, including the American Economic Review, Econometrica, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies and Journal of Financial Economics. Asim I. Khwaja, Professor, International Finance and Development (Harvard University) and Co-Founder & Board Member, Center for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP), is the Sumitomo-Foundation for Advanced Studies on International Development Professor of International Finance and Development at the Harvard Kennedy School and co-Director of the Evidence for Policy Design (EPOD). His areas of interest include economic development, finance, education, political economy, institutions, and contract theory/mechanism design. His research combines extensive fieldwork, rigorous empirical analysis, and microeconomic theory to answer questions that are motivated by and engage with policy. He has been published in leading economics journals, such as the American Economic Review and the Quarterly Journal of Economics,and has received coverage in numerous media outlets, such as The Economist, The New York Times, the Washington Post, the International Herald Tribune, Al-Jazeera, BBC, and CNN. His recent work ranges from understanding market failures in emerging financial markets to examining the private education market in low-income countries. He was selected as a Carnegie Scholar in 2009 to pursue research on how religious institutions impact individual beliefs. Maroof A. Syed President & CEO, Center for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP) and Director of Pakistan Strategy & Development, Evidence for Policy Design (EPOD-Harvard) has over 20 years of entrepreneurship, investment and leadership experience in multiple sectors. He combines academic work in public policy, economics, and engineering with extensive experience in leading organizations and building institutions. Maroofs areas of interest include evidence-based governance, data analytics and decision sciences, political economy, adaptive leadership and institutions, and the role of innovation and technology in economic development. Previously, he held senior management positions at various technology companies Broadcom Corporation (formerly Silicon Spice), Texas Instruments and Dialogic Corporation. Maroof is the 2017 recipient of the Lucius N. Littauer Award from the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS). He is on the Board of Directors of Pakistan Innovation Foundation (PIF), African Development University ILIMI Foundation (ADU) and on the Advisory Board of Sawayra. He is a Charter Member of Organization of Pakistani Entrepreneurs of North America in Boston (OPEN-Boston). Maroof has degrees in Computer Systems Engineering from Rensselaer (RPI) and a Master in Public Administration (MC/MPA) from Harvard Universitys John F. Kennedy School of Government. Saad Gulzar is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Stanford University. Prof. Gulzar's research interests lie in the political economy of development and comparative politics, with a regional focus on South Asia. He studies political participation and development by working closely with citizens, politicians, political parties, and government agencies. Some of his work is published in the American Political Science Review and the Journal of Politics. Prof. Gulzar's work has been supported by grants from the International Growth Center, the Jameel Abdul Latif Poverty Action Labs Governance Initiative, Innovations for Poverty Action, the World Bank, and the American Institute of Pakistan Studies. Prof. Gulzar is an affiliate of the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA), Evidence in Governance and Politics (EGAP), Association for Analytical Learning about Islam and Muslim Societies (AALIMS), the Center for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP), and the Consortium for Development Policy Research (CDPR). At Stanford, he is an affiliate of the Center on Global Poverty and Development, the Center for South Asia, and the Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies.
