The Institute for South Asia Studies is proud to announce two new awards in Sri Lankan Studies. The ISAS Outstanding Paper Prize in Sri Lankan Studies and the ISAS Dissertation Research Award in Sri Lankan Studies. For further details and application instructions please see below.

Institute for South Asia Studies Outstanding Paper Prize in Sri Lankan Studies

welcomes entries for its Outstanding Paper Prize in Sri Lankan Studies focused on the topic: "Assessing International obligations in the Sri Lankan conflict: Implications for International law and the narratives of state sovereignty." Submissions are welcome from any discipline, though preference will be given to papers in a social science field. Comparative papers (with Sri Lanka and another country) are also welcome.

The deadline for the paper prize is Monday, April 11, 2016.
Winners will be contacted and prizes will be announced by Monday, May 2, 2016.

Description of the Award

The amount of the paper prize award will be $500.

Eligibility

  1. Full time graduate students or undergraduates in their senior year.
  2. Students must have been registered as a full time student at any accredited university during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Guidelines for Paper Prize

  1. Faculty may nominate students, or students may enter their own papers.
  2. For each entry submit:
    • All submitted papers must be no longer than thirty typewritten (double-spaced) pages of text, exclusive of the title page, endnotes, and bibliography.
    • All pages, except for the title page, must be numbered, and all endnotes must conform to standard historical formats.
    • The author's identity is to appear nowhere on the paper.
    • A separate, unattached page should accompany the paper, identifying the author (along with the title of the paper) and providing that person's home address, telephone number, e-mail address (if available), college affiliation, graduating year and status (undergraduate or graduate student).
    • A one-page (250-word) abstract must accompany each submission. Abstract of winning paper will be published in all announcements of competition results.
  3. Papers are to demonstrate scholarly competence relevant to post war reconciliation in Sri Lanka.

Submit either:

  • In an e-mail, electronic files of 1) the paper, 2) the page with identifying information, and 3) the abstract attached as Word files. (This is the preferred method of submission.) OR
  • For persons who lack e-mail capability, four (4) printed copies of each of the following: 1) the paper, 2) the page with identifying information, and 3) the abstract.

ISAS Dissertation Research Award in Sri Lankan Studies

Award Details:

This grant designed to support dissertation research for Ph.D. candidates whose research focuses on Sri Lankan studies. We encourage proposals from students of any discipline in the social sciences. Ideally research should focus on a particular aspect of post war reconciliation.

The deadline for the paper prize is Monday, April 11, 2016.
Winners will be contacted and prizes will be announced by Monday, May 2, 2016.

Eligibility:

Open to Ph.D. students in any stage of their doctoral program. Preference will be given to students who are conducting their research or writing their dissertation.

Awards:

One award of $1,500 will be awarded

Timeline:

  • Monday, April 11, 2016: All proposals due by close of business.
  • Monday, May 2, 2016: Fellowship award announced.

To Apply:

Applicants should submit a statement of purpose outlining their dissertation research project. The statement of purpose should be 2-3 pages long and should include a summary of the research, contribution to current knowledge, methodology for carrying out the research, and describe specifically how the funds will be used.

In addition, please supply an estimated budget, a timeline, a recent CV, and two letters of reference (one must be from your current dissertation advisor).
