Abstract: At the inauguration of the National Art Gallery in Islamabad in 2007, some one remarked that the excellence of Pakistani art was perhaps it's most closely guarded secret. More than two decades later, against a tumultuous political back drop, Pakistani artists continue to surprise the art world with works of great diversity, brimming with ideas and fearlessness.   Recent years have seen a mushrooming of art schools, artists studios, galleries and interventions in public spaces.  While Pakistani artists in the diaspora have become well known internationally, it is younger artists emerging from across the country who have   produced some of the most fertile ideas in a range of genres. There have also been collaborations across disciplines which are thoughtful and relevant to Pakistani society today. The talk will attempt to talk about a few of these new practices alongside dwelling on some of the eminent names.

The Mahomedali Habib Distinguished Lecture on Pakistan is named in honor of one of the leading figures in the history of the Habib family. In addition to successfully guiding the Habib family’s transition from India to Pakistan following independence in 1947, Mahomedali Habib laid the foundations for the House of Habib, a group of powerful business and financial companies. The group has a long-standing history of philanthropy and social service and is currently leading the establishment of Habib University, a liberal arts and sciences university, in Pakistan which aims to bridge the gap between global academia and Pakistan. Toward honoring the legacy of Mahomedali Habib – who was distinguished by his love for Pakistan and his deep commitment to education and philanthropy – the Habib family has decided to endow an annual lecture series in his name. Through this lecture series the Habib family aims to improve and diversify conversations about Pakistan in the United States as well as create opportunities for US and Pakistan-based scholars to dialogue.

The South Asia Art Initiative, inaugurated in Spring 2018, is the culmination of a comprehensive art program, built over the past several years, that promoted conversation around the visual cultures of South Asia through talks, conferences, and exhibitions. The goal of the Initiative is to move onto the next level with local, national, and international collaborations that combine creative energies with insights drawn from scholarly research.
