Talk Abstract
This talk is mainly a reflection on my practice in writing art history and curating contemporary art. When I mention terms like art history, curating, and contemporary art, I reconsider certain procedures that have rendered them conceptually persuasive; stake out the shifting localities within which they may achieve another social thickness and political valence; and open them up for reconstruction between and beyond their spheres of hegemonic and transformative effects. Prompted by the harrowing pandemic in our midst, the talk will likewise try to reflect on the nature of the discipline through the nature of the historical image and the naturalesa of the artistic agency. Naturalesa derived from Spanish refers to nature, but in the Philippine language translates into a disposition or a body’s immunity in relation to external forces. Taking a more generous conception of nature as at once ecology and mediation, I complicate art history with the difficult processes of migrancy, convergence, and intimacy partly through curatorial work.
