   Zoom Event (Off Campus)

The Chowdhury Center is proud to collaborate with REACH, a global research program to improve water security for millions of poor people in Africa and South Asia, on a celebration of the bilingual Bangla-English translation launch event of the historic 'Rights of Rivers' verdict from the Bangladesh High Court!

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE EVENT WILL BE RECORDED AND THE RECORDING WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR VIEWING
-------------------------------

In February 2019, the High Court of Bangladesh delivered a landmark decision granting rivers with ‘legal personhood,’ declaring all rivers in Bangladesh to have legal protection. This official, bi-lingual translation of the verdict, approved by the High Court in October 2020, will have great value for research regarding the role of the verdict in shaping the institutional and legal landscape with major implications for industries. Given the widespread national and international interest in the implications of this historic decision, a formally authorized English translation directly from the High Court presents a significant contribution. The translation also provides useful framing for other biophysical and social research, as this will form the backdrop of future national policy discussion.

This launch event seeks to:
- Share the release of the official bilingual High Court verdict with the global community
- Improve international coverage and awareness of this landmark decision
- Increase public understanding of the implications for society and business
