A talk by social activist, author and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Professor Rajmohan Gandhi.
Abstract
Differentiating between Hinduism the religion and the ideology of Hindu Nationalism, the lecture will address the advance in India of the Hindu Nationalist project. With the BJP winning parliamentary majorities twice this decade, giving Hindu Nationalist forces, led by the RSS, almost unchecked control over the Indian polity, these forces are now within striking distance of replacing Indias current pluralist and secular Constitution with one conforming to a Hindu state. Noting also the pressures being exerted by these forces on the countrys institutions of justice, law enforcement and education, the lecture will examine the likely future of Indias religious minorities, notably Muslims and Christians, in the light of the progress of the Hindu Nationalist project, and outline the project's implications for Indias unity, integrity, and future world role."
Speaker Bio
Rajmohan Gandhi is the biographer and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. He is also a research professor at the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Illinois. He continues the work of his grandfather, trying to bring the world together through understanding and cooperation. Since September 11, 2001, he has addressed the issues between the West and the world of Islam.
