I Am Rohingya: A Genocide in Four Acts is a powerful documentary that chronicles the journey of fourteen Rohingya youth who take to the stage in order to depict their families' harrowing escape from Burma. With no prior acting experience, the decision to re-enact the stories of their people becomes a courageous act of resistance, demonstrating to the world that they will not be erased, and they will not be silenced.
The event will include a discussion with the director, Yusuf Zine.
SYNOPSIS
Inspired by the award-winning play of the same name, I Am Rohingya: A Genocide in Four Acts chronicles the journey of fourteen refugee youth who take to the stage in front of a live audience to re-enact their families harrowing experiences in Burma and beyond, ultimately raising awareness for a conflict that has increasingly resembled a cruel and systematic ethnic cleansing campaign.
Leading up to the night of their sold-out performance, the film takes audiences through the personal lives of the performers, capturing their struggles as they adjust to their new lives in Canada, and exploring the cultural identity of the most persecuted people on Earth.
With no prior acting experience, their stage production becomes a courageous act of resistance, demonstrating to the world that they will not be erased, and they will not be forgotten.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Yusuf Zine is an actor and director, known for I Am Rohingya: A Genocide in Four Acts (2018), Fame & Fidelity (2013) and Righteous Sinner (2019). He is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University with an MA in Social Justice & Community Engagement, and also pursued theatre training at the University of Waterloo.
