Dr. Carla Petievich is a retired professor of History, Urdu and Women's Studies now affiliated with the South Asia Center at the University of Texas at Austin. She has published two full-length books on Urdu poetry, Assembly of Rivals: Delhi, Lucknow and the Urdu Ghazal (1992) and When Men Speak as Women: Vocal Masquerade in Indo-Muslim Poetry (2007). She has also published a number of articles on how literature expresses and reveals cultural history.

In 2007 she co-founded the Hoshyar Foundation, which is dedicated to expanding girls' education in underserved parts of Pakistan.

Dr. Petievich earned her Ph.D. in Urdu literature and Indo-Muslim cultural history from the University of British Columbia.
