The South Asia Art Initiative and the Berkeley Pakistan Initiative invite you to a lecture by Nadeem Omar Tarar, visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Texas, Austin.

Event moderated by Asma Kazmi, Associate Professor of Art Practice at UC Berkeley.

TALK ABSTRACT

The talk is centered on the book “Colonial and National Formation of the National College of Arts, Lahore, circa the 1870s-1960s: Descripting the Archive.” Utilizing archival records spanning a century, the talk explores the institutional history of one of the four colonial art schools established in late nineteenth-century India – specifically in Lahore. The book challenges implicit categories within the archival representation of institutional dynamics and state practices, exposing the cracks in the discourse on art and craft, artisans and craftsmen, oral and literate, primitive and modern, and traditional and contemporary that have historically structured aesthetic thought and art practice in the colonial and post-colonial periods.
