The Institute for South Asia Studies invites graduate and undergraduate students at UC Berkeley to apply for the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships, which provide funding to students to encourage the study of critical and less commonly taught foreign languages in combination with area studies, international studies or international aspects of professional studies.
Awards through ISAS are available in two categories—Academic Year 2025-26 and Summer 2025—and the following languages: Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Persian, and Urdu. A FLAS grant in Sanskrit may be considered if the application demonstrates its relevance to the study of modern or contemporary South Asia.
UC Berkeley students can apply for Summer FLAS through other eligible institutions, especially the South Asian Studies Language Institute (SASLI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (if the language is offered).
For graduate students, the Academic Year FLAS Fellowship will cover registration fees up to $18,000 and provide a stipend of $20,000. For undergraduate students, the Academic Year FLAS Fellowship will cover registration fees up to $10,000 and provide a stipend of $5,000.
Please consult Berkeley Graduate Division's WEBSITE for complete instructions, eligibility criteria, and a link to the application portal.
Application deadline: February 10, 2025.
