S. S. Pirzada Dissertation Prize on Pakistan

We invite submission of dissertations on Pakistan (or the region that is now Pakistan) in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Visual & Fine Arts, Law, and Public Health. Only dissertations submitted in English and at an accredited North American or Europe-based university will be accepted. The prize comes with a $2,500 award. For information about the current prize winner  click here.

Ph.D. dissertations submitted for consideration must have been filed between September 2, 2023, and September 1, 2024.

The submission package must include the following: 

  1. A pdf abstract (< 1000 words)
  2. A pdf curriculum vitae (please include a contact number)
  3. A pdf copy of the dissertation
  4. A confidential letter from a member of the dissertation committee that speaks to the merits of the dissertation with respect to the current state of the field and the innovation that the work entails.

All should be submitted via email to Puneeta Kala (pkala@berkeley.eduno later than December 1, 2024. Late submissions will not be accepted.

The name of the prize recipient will be announced on the Institute for South Asia Studies website on Feb 16, 2025 (Pacific Standard Time). The recipient will be expected to attend an all-expense-paid award conferral ceremony at UC Berkeley in April 2025.

The Prize Committee comprises: Iftikhar Dadi (Cornell University), Munis D. Faruqui (UC Berkeley), Humeira Iqtidar (King's College London),  Ali Usman Qasmi (Lahore University of Management Sciences), and Sadia Saeed (University of San Francisco).
