Berreman-Yamanaka Award for Himalayan Studies

Himalayan Studies logoThe Berreman-Yamanaka Fellowship for Himalayan Studies' provides for an annual award of up to $1500 to UC Berkeley graduate students for research on topics related to Himalayan Studies across Bhutan, India, Nepal and Pakistan.

Only UC Berkeley graduate students are eligible.

Please submit your application by using the application portal listed below. 

The application process will begin on February 1, 2026 with the deadline for submission of application materials for travel to take place during the summer of 2026 (i.e., May through August 2026) or the 2026-27 academic year (i.e. August 2026 through May 2027), is April 1, 2026 by 5 pm

Before starting your application, please make sure to have the following documents ready.

In your application please include the following:

  1. A cover letter stating the need for travel. (750 words or less, PDF format)
  2. A 2-pagåe project proposal. Which should include the proposed date of travel, as well as all other sources of funding available in the given summer or given AY. (double-spaced) (PDF format)
  3. A budget (only for research) (PDF format)
  4. A CV (PDF format)
  5. One letter of support from your advisor (PDF, sent by the recommenders directly)
