Thodur Madabusi Krishna is a vocalist in the Carnatic form of classical music, a public intellectual who challenges traditional hegemonic paradigms, and a social activist who interrogates the intersection of caste, class, and gender within society while exploring the contours of democracy, culture, and learning. In 2016, Krishna received the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award in recognition of his forceful commitment as artist and advocate to arts power to heal Indias deep social divisions. In 2017, he received the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration for his services in promoting and preserving national integration in the country. TM Krishna has famously stated that creating art is an act of activism, and it is this very sentiment he will explore with our constituents at Stanford.
Moderated by: Aishwary Kumar and Anna Schultz.
Presented in collaboration with Stanford University's Center for Human Rights and International Justice and Center for South Asia and under the aegis of Arts & Justice Series - a speaker series that features timely explorations of religious freedom and the freedom of speech.
