BULPIP-AIPS Program Manager in Lahore

Job Description: The American Institute of Pakistan Studies and the Berkeley Urdu Language Program in Pakistan invite applications for appointment as a Program Manager to coordinate their semester-long intensive Urdu language program. The appointment is for five months (August 1 – December 31, 2019). The Program Manager will be based in Lahore (Pakistan), must be able to travel in and to Pakistan, as well as participate in a pre-departure orientation in May 2019 at the University of California, Berkeley.

Responsibilities: The Program Manager will be required to:

  • Provide oversight over all aspects of the Urdu language program including student life and housing as well as administration of the academic and institutional aspects of the program;
  • Provide weekly program updates to the BULPIP-AIPS office in the United States;
  • Act as the primary liaison between the BULPIP-AIPS Urdu Program teaching staff in Lahore and associated faculty and staff at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS);
  • Assist students in integrating into the academic and social life of the LUMS campus;
  • Help students in identifying and connecting with scholars in their fields of study or topics of research interest at LUMS as well as other local universities and institutions;
  • Organize weekly program lectures by prominent literary figures, artists, activists, etc. 
  • Organize, coordinate and oversee weekly field trips by program participants;
  • Help students at any time of the day/night in case of an emergency

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree (M.A. or higher; preference will be given to graduates of US educational institutions);
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Urdu;
  • Experience living, working, or studying in Pakistan;
  • Familiarity with the diverse academic, professional, and artistic communities of Lahore;
  • Experience in international education;
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.

BULPIP-AIPS Urdu Language Instructor in Lahore

Job Description: The American Institute of Pakistan Studies and the Berkeley Urdu Language Program in Pakistan invite applications for appointment as full-time lecturer in the newly established BULPIP-AIPS Urdu Program in Lahore (Pakistan). The appointment is for five months (August 1 – December 31, 2019).

Responsibilities: The Urdu Lecturer will be required to:

  • Teach a blended intensive course that combines intermediate and advanced levels;
  • Undertake individualized readings courses in which students read and discuss materials that are most relevant to their particular research and/or personal interests;
  • Ensure that the teaching materials are available to the students on a daily basis;
  • Make sure the students are meeting/have met basic learning goals (measured through assessment tests administered across the semester);
  • Work with the Program Manager of the BULPIP-AIPS program (who will be responsible for enriching the classroom experience of the participants);
  • Provide updates and be accountable for outcomes to the BULPIP-AIPS Curriculum Committee

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Native or near-native fluency in Urdu as well as College-level experience teaching Urdu to non-native speakers. An M.A. in South Asian Studies, Urdu language and literature, or a related field is desired, but not necessary.

BULPIP-AIPS Teaching Urdu as a Second Language Training Program in the US

Deadline: February 28, 2020

Description: The Berkeley Urdu Language Program in Pakistan (BULPIP) and the American Institute of Pakistan Studies (AIPS) invite applications from individuals interested in undertaking Urdu as a second language teacher’s training in the United States in the summer of 2019. The appointment is for a portion of the SASLI Urdu program at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and a three-day workshop held at a partner University.

Outcomes: By the end of the program the Urdu Lecturer will be expected to:

  • Create and teach a beginning course in Urdu as a second language;
  • Create and teach an intermediate course in Urdu as a second language;
  • Those who successfully complete the program will be eligible to apply later for a one semester/quarter placement at a US-based university to deepen their training as a teacher of Urdu as a second language

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • This program is only open to Urdu teachers based in Pakistan with demonstrated experience teaching Urdu language classes at the college or university level;
  • Fluency in Urdu and English;
  • An M.A. in Urdu language or literature, Linguistics, or a related field is desired but not required
