 General Timeline

  • All applications MUST be received by 5pm (Pacific Standard Time), January 21, 2019
  • Skype interview of shortlisted candidates will be scheduled for mid-Februrary 
  • Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application status by end of February
  • Program Dates: August 21, 2019 through December 12, 2019 (tentative approx. fifteen weeks)

Fellowships will cover the following expenses:

  • Round trip economy class airfare to Lahore, Pakistan on a US carrier
  • Visa fee for Pakistan
  • Admission, tuition, and hostel fees for LUMS
  • Travel & Emergency Evacuation Insurance coverage of upto $500 for the duration of the program
  • A monthly maintenance allowance
  • All excursions and activities that fall within the program

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the program all applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and meet ONE of the outlined criteria:

  1. Have completed a Bachelor's program from an accredited U.S. University
  2. Be enrolled in a U.S. accredited graduate level university program
  3. Be a scholars/faculty affiliated with an institution of higher learning in the U.S.

Applicants must demonstrate intermediate level expertise in Urdu before starting the program. For this, each applicant must provide:

a description of all Urdu language related courses taken and

two letters of recommendation: one attesting to the applicant's Urdu language level and the other to the applicant's academic preparedness for the program.

Note:

  • All recommendation letters will be treated as confidential
  • Applicants with a minimum of two years experience in Hindi are eligible for an award if, prior to entering the program, they have learned the Urdu script

Description of all Urdu language and related courses taken

Urdu Language Level: To be submitted by a past or current Urdu language instructor

  • If currently enrolled in a language course, the language evaluation letter must be submitted by a current Urdu language instructor.
  • If not currently taking an Urdu language course, the language evaluation letter should be submitted by the applicant’s most recent Urdu language instructor.
  • If the applicant has not studied the Urdu language formally, s/he must identify a professional Urdu language instructor who can accurately assess the applicant's Urdu language skills.

Academic Preparedness: To be submitted by a current or past instructor/professor

Ability to participate in the BULPIP-AIPS Program is contingent upon an applicant’s ability to receive a visa for Pakistan. Although the Institute for South Asia Studies (ISAS) at UC Berkeley will work with awarded students to secure a Pakistani visa, we cannot be held responsible for the denial of a student’s application for a visa

Short listed candidates will be required to participate in a Skype interview with the selection committee

Grantees will be expected to show proof of health and travel insurance for the duration of the program prior to departure

Participation in the program is restricted to fellowship recipients. 

All qualified students, regardless of race, sex, color, creed, age, handicap, or sexual orientation are welcome

How to Apply

Before clicking the “Start Application” link below, please make sure to read steps 1 through 5 given below.

Online submission of applications will be accepted between November 15, 2018 - January 21, 2019.

Step 1: Click on “Start Application” to enter the Application Portal (Opens November 15, 2018). 

Step 2: Register for the Berkeley-AIPS Urdu Language Program in Pakistan Application: 2019

Step 3: Keep the application materials listed below ready for uploading on to the Application Portal. Please make sure that before uploading all documents are saved as pdf files.

  1. All 13 pages of the completed Berkeley-AIPS Urdu Language Program in Pakistan Application.
  2. A CV which details work experience, honors/awards, educational background (area of study), community service involvements, and other relevant information.
  3. Transcript(s) of your course work.
  4. A scanned copy of your check for $50 (non-refundable fee) made payable to Regents of the University of California. Please note that applications will not be processed until the hard copy of the check is received by the Institute. Actual checks should be mailed to:

Step 4: Obtain two letters of recommendation: one attesting to your Urdu language abilities and the other to your academic preparedness for the program. These letters must be uploaded at the Application Portal by the recommenders directly. After registering at the Application Portal, at the bottom of the second page, you will see a unique URL that you must give to your recommenders so they can directly upload the letter to the Application Portal. Please do let them know that the letter should be saved as a pdf file before uploading.

All documents must be received by Institute for South Asia Studies staff no later than 5pm PST on Monday, January 21, 2019. We highly recommend submitting all documents prior to the deadline as late submissions will not be accepted
