Jane Singh (Ph.D., South and Southeast Asian Studies, UC Berkeley) teaches AAS 127:  South Asian American Historical and Contemporary Social Issues. The class uses personal narratives, scholarly works, community studies, film and literature to examine where South Asians are located/dislocated in U.S. history, society, politics and economics.  It addresses such topics as diaspora and transnationality, race and ethnicity, activism and resistance, gender and sexuality, and youth culture and identity formation.   Dr. Singh’s research interests include gender and generation in emerging South Asian American communities; activism and political movements in the South Asian diaspora; historical and contemporary race and ethnic relations in the U.S.; and connections between colonialism, neocolonialism, globalization, and South Asian emigration.
