The Berkeley-AIPS Urdu Language Program in Pakistan (BULPIP-AIPS) is accepting applications for its Fall 2016 intensive Urdu language immersion program based at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Pakistan. Jointly administered by the America Institute of Pakistan Studies (AIPS) and the Berkeley Urdu Language Program in Pakistan (BULPIP) at ISAS in the University of California, Berkeley, this Urdu language program will offer daily classroom instruction, five days a week, for approximately fifteen weeks. Classes will be small and individual tutorials provided. There will be regular assignments outside of class and special emphasis will be placed on connecting with the local speech community as well as self-management of learning. Participants will need to take part in all program events, such as attending films, plays and other cultural activities. The program will award annual fellowships to up to ten US-based students.

Fellowships:

Fellowships will cover the following expenses:

  • Round trip economy class airfare to Lahore, Pakistan on a US carrier
  • Visa fee for Pakistan
  • Admission, tuition, and hostel fees for LUMS
  • Travel & Emergency Evacuation Insurance coverage of upto $500 for the duration of the program
  • A monthly maintenance allowance
  • All excursions and activities that fall within the program

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the program all applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and meet ONE of the outlined criteria:

  1. Have completed a Bachelor's program from an accredited U.S. University
  2. Be enrolled in a U.S. accredited graduate level university program
  3. Be a scholars/faculty affiliated with an institution of higher learning in the U.S.

Applicants must demonstrate intermediate level expertise in Urdu before starting the program. For this, each applicant must provide:

a description of all Urdu language related courses taken and

two letters of recommendation: one attesting to the applicant's Urdu language level and the other to the applicant's academic preparedness for the program.

Note:

  • All recommendation letters will be treated as confidential
  • Applicants with a minimum of two years experience in Hindi are eligible for an award if, prior to entering the program, they have learned the Urdu script

Description of all Urdu language and related courses taken

Urdu Language Level: To be submitted by a past or current Urdu language instructor

  • If currently enrolled in a language course, the language evaluation letter must be submitted by a current Urdu language instructor.
  • If not currently taking an Urdu language course, the language evaluation letter should be submitted by the applicant’s most recent Urdu language instructor.
  • If the applicant has not studied the Urdu language formally, s/he must identify a professional Urdu language instructor who can accurately assess the applicant's Urdu language skills.

Academic Preparedness: To be submitted by a current or past instructor/professor

Ability to participate in the BULPIP-AIPS Program is contingent upon an applicant’s ability to receive a visa for Pakistan. Although the Institute for South Asia Studies (ISAS) at UC Berkeley will work with awarded students to secure a Pakistani visa, we cannot be held responsible for the denial of a student’s application for a visa

Short listed candidates will be required to participate in a Skype interview with the selection committee

Grantees will be expected to show proof of health and travel insurance for the duration of the program prior to departure

All qualified students, regardless of race, sex, color, creed, age, handicap, or sexual orientation are welcome
